Vote down Proposition “Hate.”
It looks like one Republican has come over to the other side - of the gay issue, that is. Mayor Jerry Sanders found that some legislative measures can hit home in a most unusual way (from Sign On San Diego):
In San Francisco this morning, Supreme Court justices will hear arguments about the validity of the measure and the same-sex weddings conducted before its approval. The justices will have 90 days to issue rulings.
Sanders, a Republican who reversed course two years ago to support gay marriage, announced at yesterday’s rally that his daughter, Lisa, recently had become engaged to her partner, Meaghan Yaple.
Sounding a theme that would be repeated by several speakers who followed him, Sanders said those who oppose Proposition 8 are defending the rights of all minorities, not just gays and lesbians.
“When one group starts taking away rights from another group, it can happen to any group,” he said. “Proposition 8 puts all minority groups at risk.”
This is a human rights issue. Always has been. It’s embarrassing that we continue to deal with narrow-minded, ignorant public servants who have a boner for pushing this kind of amendment through.
As I’ve mentioned before, I am a great supporter of gay rights not due to a personal affiliation with it (I’m a happily married heterosexual) but because of the larger issue. There are so many things on this planet that need to be corrected, so many, that things like this, little issues, should glide through easily.
Unfortunately, there are too many people out there who are uncomfortable in their own skin and, because of that, need to control the world around them to your detriment. Hopefully smarter, more emotionally sound minds will disown this amendment and we can move on to other things.

But this is sort of a double edged sword isn’t it? On one side you have the civil rights issue regarding a minority group and impossing a ban on a persons rights. On the other hand, it was put to a vote in the state and overturned, which would say that a majority of people in the state did not approve of said right. It was voted on, and lost. That should be the end of it until enough people vote to have it over turned.
What is basically being done about this is an intervention by attourneys and gay rights groups with the judicial system to say,”We don’t care if you voted and we lost, FUCK YOU! We are going to take this to court!”
I really don’t fucking care if gay people get married, I don’t. But this is bullshit. Where does it end if every time a vote is taken and the government steps in because someone doesn’t like the outcome?
The best way to solve this mess is to take government out of the equation totally. If man wants to marry another man, fine. If a man wants to marry his goat, fuck it, ok. Why not make marriage a social thing and take away all of the entitlments, tax breaks, and everything else that comes along with it? This would work.
Well, there was a time when segregation was approved by the majority as well as banning marriage between a white and a black. Sometimes, there are issues that go beyond the current majorities and talk to a greater understanding.
And as far as marrying a goat, I think it’s already approved in some third world countries - and the goat is the one with the dowry.
Touche!
